Oh My Fright - A Sneak Peek!
Hello! Today I am sharing a few projects I worked on this week using a "coming soon" Stampin’ Up!® Bundle. The Oh My Fright Bundle (item 168176), which includes the Oh My Fright photopolymer stamp set (item 168169) and the co-ordinating Oh My Fright dies (item 168175), will be included in the July release of new Online Exclusives Products as part of the Frightfully Fun Suite Collection (item 168183). Products in the July Online Exclusives release will be available for ordering starting Wednesday July 1. The Frightfully Fun Suite Collection also includes: Frightfully Fun 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 168168); Swirls Of Magic Embossing Folder (item 168179); Adhesive-Backed Bats Ghosts & Dots (item 168180); Black 3/8" Iridescent Ribbon (item 168181); and White Gable Boxes (item 168182 - package of ten). All items included in the Suite Collection, including the Oh My Fright stamp set and co-ordinating dies, will also be available separately.
To complete my projects this week I also used the following additional Stampin’ Up!® dies, stamp set, and Designer Series Papers:
- Nested Essentials dies (item 161597) - I used the smallest rounded corner rectangle die to cut the earring bases; and the 1 1/2" x2 1/8" flag die to cut the first project's sentiment flag;
- from the Online Exclusives Scalloped Wishes dies (item 167452) I used the smallest flower and double-leafed dies for the earrings; and the smallest detailed frame die for the spooky Archie specimen card;
- I used the Mini Alphabet dies (item 162934) to cut the "BOO" letters for the Archie specimen card;
- from the Online Exclusives Capturing Smiles dies (item 167132) I used the film strip die for embellishments (including a trimmed edge strip) on the Archie specimen card;
- the clipboard clip die cut used on the Archie specimen card was cut using the recently retired Just A Note dies (item 166101);
- I used the Stylish Shapes dies (item 159183) to cut the square window openings in the framing mats on both the first project and the card; and I used the shorter of the two broad banner dies to cut the sentiment banner used on the card, and the longer of the two narrower banner dies to cut the banner for the inside of the card;
- I used the note paper image from the Extraordinary Life stamp set (item 167713) for the Archie specimen card;
- to cover the cardboard specimen card base I used one of the Gorgeous Grape patterned papers from the recently retired Perennial Lavender 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 162593); and
- on the earring tent card I used two patterned papers from the retired Magic In This Night 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 153517 - featured in the August-December 2020 Mini Catalogue).
For the earrings and embellishments on the Archie specimen card I used "faux metallic" die cuts - die cuts that were cut from Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) that had first been covered with silver foil tape that I picked up at Home Depot. After the die cuts had been cut from the foil tape covered cardstock I used a fine-grit sanding sponge to scruff up the surface of the tape before painting the die cuts with black acrylic paint, which I used my fingers to work into the scratches and indentations of the die cuts - I was trying for an old pewter like finish. I really enjoy playing with this technique - a little messy maybe but so much fun!
The images and sentiments were stamped using VersaFine Clair Nocturne ink, which I purchased at my local paper crafting shop, and with the exception of the Extraordinary Life note paper image all images and sentiments were stamped on watercolour paper. For colouring images I used the following Classic Stampin' inks and Classic Stampin' ink refills mixed with water and applied with a small paint brush:
- Basic Gray ink (item 149165);
- Gray Granite ink (item 147118); and
- Pumpkin Pie ink refill (item 105229).
The window backing panels for both the first project and the card were watercolour paper panels that had been coloured by ink smooshing Gray Granite ink (item 147118) before the spiderweb image was stamped. For the ink smooshing I (a) applied ink to a clean acrylic stamp block by pouncing the ink pad over the block surface, (b) misted the inked block with water using one of the Stampin' Spritzers (item 126185 - package of two), and then (c) placed the watercolour paper panel on top of the block to pick up some of the ink. After removing the watercolour paper panel from the block I used my heat gun (Heat Tool - item 129053) to dry the ink. To add a little depth to an ink smooshed panel you can repeat the inking process several times - being sure to dry the panel in between inkings. This is definitely another fun technique because you will get such a wide variety of effects. The card's "Happy Halloween" sentiment banner was die cut from another piece of ink smooshed watercolour paper. After die cutting the banner I sponged around the edge of the die cut with additional Gray Granite ink.
To shade the "Boo to you" flag on the first project I used one of the Blending Brushes (item 153611 - package of three) to apply Gray Granite ink. I also used one of the Blending Brushes to shade the specimen card's trimmed note paper image (stamped on Basic White cardstock - item 166780) with Crumb Cake ink (item 147116). After inking the trimmed image panel I lightly misted it with water using one of the Stampin' Spritzers, and then wrinkled it up with my fingers. After the paper was dry I added a little more ink around the edges.
On the specimen card I also added a little bit of cheesecloth that I had coloured using Crumb Cake ink refill (item 121029) mixed with water (I squeezed a few drops of ink refill into a small spray bottle and then added water). I first wet the cheesecloth with clean water and then sprayed it with the ink refill/water mixture. With a higher ratio of water to ink refill I got a subtle just off-white shade for the cheesecloth.
Just a quick note regarding the additional basic tools and supplies I used to complete my projects this week:
- Paper Trimmer (item 152392) for trimming cardstock, watercolour paper, and Designer Series Paper, and for scoring fold lines. To ensure crisp folds I also used my Bone Folder (item 102300) to burnish all the folded scored lines;
- Stampin' Cut & Emboss Machine (item 149653) for all die cutting;
- Take Your Pick Tool (item 144107) - the tacky putty tip is definitely a great help for picking up and placing small die cuts and embellishments; and
- for the main adhesive, Multipurpose Liquid Glue (item 110755).
On with the projects!
- Gray Granite cardstock (item 146983) for the 7" square base panel, and the 6 1/8" square matting panel;
- Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) for the 6" square and 6 1/4" square matting panels;
- watercolour paper for the 5 7/8" square framing mat with 2 3/8" square window opening (die cut using the Stylish Shapes dies);
- Gray Granite ink (item 147118) to add splatters to the watercolour paper framing mat - I flicked over the panel the paint brush used to mix the ink with a little water;
- double-sided tape (Tear & Tape Adhesive - item 154031) to attach the watercolour paper window framing mat to the spiderweb stamped window backing panel, and then the next three Basic Black and Gray Granite cardstock matting panels. To attach the fully matted window framing mat to the Gray Granite cardstock background panel I used strips trimmed from Foam Adhesive Sheets (item 152815);
- Stampin' Dimensionals (item 104430) and Mini Stampin' Dimensionals (item 144108), trimmed as necessary, to attach the two cat, friendly ghost (I stacked two Dimensionals under the right side of Casper where he overhung the window backing panel), and the top bat images. I used Multipurpose Liquid Glue to attach the bat at the upper right corner of the window opening; and
- four small, three medium, and two large of the Antique Pearls (item 164679).
Additional supplies used to complete this 5 1/2" square top-fold card:
- Gray Granite cardstock (item 146983) for the card base;
- Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) for the 5" square matting panels for the front and inside of card, and the inside panel's 1/8" x 3 1/4" strip;
- Basic White Thick cardstock (item 159229) for the 4 1/2" square inside panel;
- watercolour paper for the 4 7/8" square framing mat with 2 3/8" square window opening (cut using the Stylish Shapes dies) - as with the first project I added Gray Granite ink (item 147118) splatters; and
- Stampin' Dimensionals (item 104430) and Mini Stampin' Dimensionals (item 144108), trimmed as necessary, used to attach the ginger cat under the witch's hat, the head of the ghost, the bat, and the sentiment banner on the front of the card, and the spooked cat on the inside of the card. The banner for the inside of the card was die cut from a leftover piece of Gray Granite ink smooshed watercolour paper.
Never too early to organize your Halloween jewellery! For each of the earrings I cut a base backing panel and a additional backing shadow ghost die cut from Basic Black cardstock (item 121045). For each earring I glued the "faux metallic" earring base and the Basic Black cardstock earring base together with wrong sides together. I used my Crop-A-Dile to punch the 1/8" holes to accomodate the jump rings. I used black jump rings (2 sizes) and black earring hooks from my stash. The tent display card measures 5" tall x 3" wide and I used a 10" x 3" piece of Basic Black cardstock (item 121045), scored on the 10" side at 5", for the card base. For the brace I used a 3" by just under 3" piece of Basic Black cardstock, scored on the 3" side at 1/2", 1 1/2", and 2 1/2" (valley/mountain/valley fold). After I had added the DSP panels and additional strips of Basic Black cardstock to the front and back panels, and punched the holes in the front panel again using the Crop-A-Dile, I glued on the brace, aligning the folds lines made at 1/2" and 2 1/2" with the bottom edges of the inside front and back panels of the card.
And finally . . .
My final Oh My Fright project is also my Archie project for this week. For the base of the 4 3/4" x 3 1/4" specimen card I used light weight cardboard, covered with the Gorgeous Grape patterned Perennial Lavender DSP. The half square notches along the top and bottom edges of the card were punched using a long-retired Stampin’ Up!® 1/4" Square Punch (item 104943), and I lined up the edge of the punch with the sides of the card, punching the notches with the back of the punch facing up so that I could more accurately determine that I was punching out a half square. I used the 2" square die from the Stylish Shapes dies to cut the window opening, and behind the window opening I glued a trimmed piece of inkjet Transparency Film. I used Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) for the Capturing Smiles film strip die cuts, the two stand alone bats, the backing shadow bat for the "faux metallic" bat on the clipboard clip, the backing shadow die cut for poor spooked Archie, the backing shadow die cut for the friendly ghost, and for the backing shadow die cuts for the letters. I used some black cord from my stash for the bow tied on the clip. I will put this specimen card in Archie's album!
