Tools For Dad!

Hello!  Today I am sharing a few projects I worked on this week using the Stampin' Up! Trusty Tools stamp set (item 163274) and the co-ordinating Trusty Tools dies (item 162722) - bearing in mind that Father's Day is Sunday!  However, when considering the Trusty Tools stamp set and co-ordinating Trusty Tools dies bear in mind that you are by no means restricted to masculine projects - there are very many handywomen out there too!!
Trusty Tools dies - 162722
Just a brief summary of the basic tools and supplies I used to complete my projects this week:

  • Paper Trimmer (item 152392) - for trimming paper and cardstock - can also be used for scoring;
  • stylus and scoreboard (Simply Scored Scoring Tool - item 122334) - for scoring fold lines, and decorative lines.  To ensure crisp folds I also burnish all folded scored lines using my Bone Folder (item 102300);
  • Stampin' Cut & Emboss Machine (item 149653) - for all die cutting and embossing;
  • Paper Snips Scissors (item 103579) - these sharp little scissors are great for trimming die cuts - and of course for fussy cutting too!;
  • Take Your Pick Tool (item 144107) - the paper piercer, mini spatula, and tacky putty tips are a great help for picking up and placing small die cuts and embellishments; and
  • for the main adhesive, Multipurpose Liquid Glue (item 110755).
For all card bases I used Basic White Thick cardstock (item 159229).

To apply ink to add shading to cardstock die cuts, I used Small Blending Brushes (item 160518).  I used Stazon Jet Black Ink (item 101406) to stamp all images and sentiments. For the metallic die cuts I used some leftover scraps of silver cardstock from my stash - using a fine grit sandpaper to add some scratches to the jaws of the pliers, and the ferrules (metal bands) on the paint brush and pencil.  For the paint brush ferrule I die cut a portion of the paint brush body from the silver cardstock - trimming for the proper fit and placement, and adding two scored lines for the crimp that secures the ferrule to the handle - and gluing it onto the paint brush body to slightly overlap the bristles die cut.

On with the projects!
For this project I was inspired by my Dad's old wood workbench - and all the treasures that were kept on it!  To complete this workbench gift box, which measures 8" tall including the pegboard panel (the box portion is 4 1/2" tall) x 4 3/4" wide x 2" deep I used the following additional supplies:
  • for the box:  two 7 1/4" x 6 1/2" pieces of Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) each scored on the 7 1/4" side at 4 3/4" and 6 3/4" (1/2" tab is the glue tab), and scored on the 6 1/2" side at 2" (bottom flaps);
  • for the lid:  a 6 7/8" x 4 1/8" piece of Basic Black cardstock scored at 1" on all four sides;
  • for the lid's back panel a 4 7/8" x 4 3/8" piece of Basic Black cardstock (this is glued to to the back of the lid with one 4 7/8" side flush with the bottom edge of the back of the lid);
  • for the back panel's sentiment panel a 4 5/8" x 3 1/8" piece of Pebbled Path cardstock (item 161722) - immediately after stamping the sentiment, and before the ink had a chance to completely dry, I rubbed over the stamped sentiment with paper towel for a softening effect.  I also added a few splatters of Crumb Cake Ink Refill (item 121029) mixed with water by flicking the paint brush used to mix the Ink Refill and water - but these splatters turned out so subtle as to be almost invisible!  I also sponged all edges of the panel with Crumb Cake ink (item 147116);
  • for the pegboard's matting panel a 4 1/2" x 3 1/8" piece of Pebbled Path cardstock - the edges sponged with Crumb Cake ink;
  • Timber 3D Embossing Folder (item 156406) - one inside panel dragged with Early Espresso ink pad (item 147114) - to emboss several panels of Pebbled Path cardstock (panels trimmed to fit the Embossing Folder) from which I cut the following:
  1. for the box:  four 4 1/2" x 1 1/2" strips for the corner "posts" - scored on the 1 1/2" side at 3/4"; for the cross beams:  two @ 5/8" x 3 1/4*"; two @ 5/8" x 1/2*"; two @ 3/8" x 3 1/4*"; and two @ 3/8" x 1/2*".  I glued the corner posts on first, and then fitted the cross beams between the posts - the bottom edge of the wide beams 1 1/4" from the bottom edge of the box; and the top edge of the narrow beams 3/4" from the bottom edge of the wide beams.  *I found that it was best not to cut the lengths of all the cross beams right off the bat but rather cut each beam to length individually to ensure a better fit between the corner posts, as sometimes the actual measurement would be a tiny bit more or less than expected . . .
  2. for the lid:  two 2 1/8" x 1" strips; and two 4 7/8" x 1" strips.  The back panel was glued to the lid before the embossed strips were added,  I sponged the edges of all embossed strips with Crumb Cake ink;
  • Crumb Cake cardstock (item 120953) for the die cut pegboard panel - trimmed to 4 1/8" x 2 3/4" - edges sponged with Crumb Cake ink, and then panel glued to a 4 1/4" x 2 7/8" piece of Basic Black cardstock, which was then glued to the Pebbled Path cardstock matting panel, and then the fully matted pegboard panel glued to the backing panel;
  • to the the top of the workbench I glued a 4 3/4" x 2" piece trimmed from a neutral section of one of the sheets from the recently retired Earthen Elegance 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 161503) - all edges sponged with Crumb Cake ink;
  • for the tools:  Crushed Curry cardstock (item 131199) for the body of the drill (edges shaded with Pumpkin Pie ink - item 147086); Basic Black cardstock for the drill's base, drill bit collar, and decorative circle (this circle is the negative or inside circle from the life preserver die from the Beach Day dies - item 162799) - edges shaded with Craft Stampin' White Ink (item 147277);  Pecan Pie cardstock (item 161717) embossed with the Timber 3D Embossing Folder inked with Pecan Pie ink (item 161665) for the handle of the paint brush (additional Pecan Pie ink sponged around the edges); Basic Beige cardstock (item 164511) for the bristles of the paint brush (shaded with Crumb Cake ink); Pebbled Path cardstock - shaded with Crumb Cake ink - for the wrench; Real Red cardstock (item 102482) for the plier handles (shaded with Real Red ink - item 147084); Smoky Slate cardstock (item 131202) for the screws, nuts, and "washers" - shaded with Basic Gray ink (item 149165) and Pecan Pie ink; the life preserver die from the Beach Day dies, and a frame cut using the beach ball circle die from the Beach Day dies and the small circle perch die from the Country Birdhouse dies (item 163400), to make the "washers"; and Crumb Cake cardstock for the ruler, cut using the ruler die from the Crafting With You dies (item 161225) - I used a fine-tipped Sharpie marker to fill in the debossed markings on the ruler, and shaded the ruler with Crumb Cake ink;

  • watercolour paper for the whole pencil die cut - I used Basic Gray ink to colour the lead, Crumb Cake ink the collar, and Calypso Coral ink (item 147101) the eraser.  I die cut the pencil body from Misty Moonlight cardstock (item 153081), shading with Misty Moonlight ink (item 153118).  I trimmed the piece for the ferrule from a whole pencil silver cardstock die cut;
  • small tag from the Mini Pocket Envelope dies (item 159167) to cut the tags for the "paint" swatches.  For each swatch I glued three 1/4" strips of co-ordinating cardstock to a piece of Basic White Thick cardstock (item 159229) and then die cut the tag.  The cardstock used for the swatches:  Lemon Lime Twist (item 144245), Granny Apple Green (item 146990), and Garden Green (item 102584); Boho Blue (item 161724), Misty Moonlight, and Night of Navy (item 100867); and Pool Party (item 122924), Coastal Cabana (item 131297), and Summer Splash (item 163797).  These little swatches were certainly a lot of fun to play with and I am anxious to make more!;

  • from a left over piece of the grid patterned paper from the retired Trusty Toolbox 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 162978 - one of the January-February 2024 Sale-A-Bration products) I trimmed a 2 1/2" x approximately 2 3/4" piece, sponging the edges with Crumb Cake ink, curled it with my Bone Folder, and then rolled it around a skewer, spot gluing.  I added some splatters with Crumb Cake Ink Refill mixed with water before gluing the paper to the workbench top;
  • Stampin' Dimensionals (item 104430) to attach drill to the pegboard panel; and
  • one small dot from the recently retired Rustic Metallic Adhesive-Backed Dots (item 159082) for the center of the plier blades.

In addition to Basic White Thick cardstock for the card base, and a few washers, screws, and nuts left over from the workbench project, I used the following supplies to complete this 2 1/2" x 2 3/4" top-fold gift card:
  • a 2 1/4" x 2 1/2" piece of woodgrain paper from the Country Woods 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 163393) - edges sponged with Crumb Cake ink (item 147116); and
  • a 2 3/8" x 2 5/8" piece of Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) for the matting panel.

Additional supplies used to complete this 5" x 4 1/2" top-fold card:
  • Pebbled Path checked patterned paper from Nature's Sweetness Specialty Designer Series Paper (item 162616) for the front 4 3/8" x 3 7/8" panel, and the inside panel's 3 1/8" x 3/4" strip - all edges sponged with Basic Gray ink (item 149165);
  • Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) for the 4 1/2" x 4" matting panel;
  • watercolour paper for the whole pencil die cuts; stamped and die cut hammer, wrench, and measuring tape; and sentiment panel;
  • Basic Gray ink, Crumb Cake ink (item 147116), and Calypso Coral ink (item 147101) to colour the pencils' leads, collars, and erasers respectively;
  • Peach Pie cardstock (item 163799) for the die cut pencil bodies - shaded with Pumpkin Pie ink (item 147086);
  • Basic Gray ink, Pecan Pie ink (item 161665), and Early Espresso ink (item 147114) to colour hammer and wrench;
  • Basic Gray ink, Real Red ink (item 147084), and Daffodil Delight ink (item 147094) to colour the measuring tape;
  • rounded corner rectangle die from Nested Essentials dies (item 161597) to die cut sentiment panel (after sentiment was stamped); and

  • Crumb Cake ink to shade the sentiment panel - I dabbed over the shaded panel with a damp paper towel to create the blotchy effect.
And finally . . .
Additional supplies used to complete this 4 1/2" x 3 1/2" top-fold card:
  • an ATC sized (2 1/2" x 3 1/2") watercolour paper panel - to colour the panel I added drops of Granny Apple Green Ink Refill (item 147163) and Garden Green Ink Refill (item 102059) to a clean clear block, spritzed both the block and the watercolour paper panel with water (Stampin' Spritzers - item 126185), then "smooshed" the watercolour paper panel onto the block - I repeated this process several times, drying the ink in between "smooshes" (to dry the ink I used a heat gun - Heat Tool - item 129053);
  • Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) for the 3 5/8" x 2 5/8" matting panel;
  • watercolour paper for the stamped and die cut paint brushes - coloured using Crumb Cake ink (item 147116), Basic Gray ink (item 149165), and Early Espresso ink (item 147114); and
  • one large dot from the recently retired Rustic Metallic Adhesive-Backed Dots (item 159082) added to the handle of each of the three paint brushes.
