Playing With a Few Watercolouring Techniques!

Hello!  Over the weekend my sister and I were playing with some watercolouring techniques - and I didn't want to stop!  Today I am sharing several  projects I worked on this week using a few watercolouring techniques:
  • applying ink to a clear stamp block and then either spritzing (Stampin' Spritzers - item 126185) the block or the watercolour paper with water and then stamping the watercolour paper with the inked block ("block technique").  The amount of ink bleeding or spreading will depend upon how much water is used and the ink can be left to air dry or a heat gun (Heat Tool - item 129053) can be used to speed up the drying time - it is amazing how many different variations of colour will appear from one colour of ink!  Additional colour splatters can be stamped using splatter stamps, such as those included with the Painted Poppies stamp set (item 151599) and the Nature's Prints stamp set (item 158793).  The results from the "block technique" can be used as decorative panels or used for die cuts;

  • applying ink(s) to a stamp and then either spritzing the stamp or the watercolour paper with water and then stamping on the watercolour paper ("inked stamp technique") - again the amount of water used will affect the amount of bleeding or blurring of the inked image, and again a heat gun can be used to speed up the drying time.  As with the "block technique" the results are unpredictable - but therein lies the fun! To have a little more control over the ink bleeding/blurring (and to pretty much maintain the image outline) you can ink the stamp and rather than spritzing the stamp or the watercolour paper before stamping, stamp on the watercolour paper as you would normally do and then cover the stamped image with a piece of paper towel and spritz the paper towel ("paper towel technique") - the amount of water and how much you press the moistened paper towel against the inked image will affect the amount of ink bleeding/blurring - you can also periodically lift the moistened paper towel to keep an eye on how much ink bleeding/blurring is happening; and
  • stamping the image on watercolour paper and colouring the image using watercolour pencils or water-based inks ("colouring technique").   It is very important that the ink used to stamp the image will not be affected by the application of water - a great ink to use is the Stazon Ink (Stazon Jet Black Ink - item 101406; and Stazon Saddle Brown Ink - item 151508).

"Inked Stamp Technique"
For this 8 1/2" x 3 1/2" slimline card I used the inked stamp technique on the front panel - using Evening Evergreen Ink (item 155576) and the fractured script stamp from the Quiet Meadow stamp set (item 155082).  To "tone down" the panel I wrapped the panel with vellum cardstock (Vellum 8 1/2" x 11" Cardstock - item 101856).  The butterflies, cut from watercolour paper using the Brilliant Wings dies (item 155523), were sponged with Evening Evergreen Ink, spritzed with water, and then overstamped using Evening Evergreen Ink and the ledger stamp from the Ranunculus Romance stamp set (item 157968).  For the interior panel and the sentiment banner I used Basic White Thick cardstock (item 159229),  The "best wishes" sentiment, from the Happiness Abounds stamp set (item 159238), was stamped in Evening Evergreen Ink, and the banner was cut using the Stylish Shapes dies (item 159183).  I used Stampin' Dimensionals (item 104430) to attach the sentiment banner.  To three of the butterflies I added one of the Rustic Metallic Adhesive-Backed Dots (item 159082).

For this 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" Crumb Cake cardstock (item 120953) card I used Rich Razzleberry Ink (item 147091) and Garden Green Ink (item 147089) to ink the flower stamp from the Wonderful World stamp set - which, together with the Wonderful World  12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 159918), will be a Sale-A-Bration product, available for free with a $120.00 CDN order (before shipping and taxes) during Sale-A-Bration that will run from July 1, 2022 to August 31, 2022.  To resemble a page torn from a sketchbook I used the spiral notebook edge die from the Blossoming Happiness dies (item 158823).
I also used the following additional supplies:
  • Early Espresso cardstock (item 119686) - front panel mat;
  • Rich Razzleberry patterned paper from the 6" x 6" Designer Series Paper Assortments - Regals (item 159256) - front panel;

"Block Technique" and "Inked Stamp Technique"

  • Rich Razzleberry cardstock (item 115316) and Soft Suede cardstock (item 115318) for the front panel mats;
  • Soft Suede cardstock for the tag hole re-enforcer;
  • small scraps of Soft Suede patterned paper from the 6" x 6" Designer Series Paper Assortments - Neutrals (item 159257);

  • Brushed Brass Butterflies (item 158136) - two added to the tag; and
  • Multipurpose Liquid Glue (item 110755).
"Block Technique" and "Paper Towel Technique"
For this 4 7/8" x 4" Calypso Coral cardstock (item 122925) card I stamped the flower image from the Ranunculus Romance stamp set (item 157968) using Starry Sky Ink (item 159212) and used the "paper towel technique" to control the ink bleeding/burring; and for the block technique I used Calypso Coral Ink (item 147101).  The image panel was cut using the Stitched Rectangles dies (item 151820).  The "just for you" sentiment, also from the Ranunculus Romance stamp set, was stamped using Starry Sky Ink and the tag was cut using the Tailor Made Tags dies (item 155563).  I also used Starry Sky patterned paper from the 6" x 6" 2022-2024 In Colour Designer Series Paper Assortments (item 159253); 2022-2024 In Colour Matte Decorative Dots (item 159186); Linen Thread (item 104199); an old Stampin' Up! button from my stash; and as adhesive, Multipurpose Liquid Glue (item 110755).

"Inked Stamp Technique" and "Colouring Image Technique"
For this 4" x 3 1/4" Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) gift card I stamped the fractured sentiment stamp from the Quiet Meadow stamp set (item 155082) in Soft Suede Ink (item 147115) on watercolour paper that I had lightly spritzed with water.  After the background stamping was dry I stamped the floral image (also from the Quiet Meadow stamp set), also using Soft Suede Ink.  Using a fine-tipped paint brush and very little water I coloured in the stems and shaded parts of the petals, also adding a few splatters of the Soft Suede Ink.  I used the spiral notebook edge die from the Blossoming Happiness dies (item 158823) and sponged the panel edges with Soft Suede Ink.  Around the panel I tied Crumb Cake baker's twine (Baker's Twine Essentials Pack - item 155475), and added two of the Matte Black Dots (item 154284).  Behind the image panel I added some distressed scraps of Soft Suede patterned paper from the 6" x 6" Designer Series Paper Assortments - Neutrals (item 159257).  For the interior panel I used Very Vanilla Thick cardstock (item 144237), splattered with Soft Suede Ink, and added the bottom of the torn image panel.  For the adhesive I used Multipurpose Liquid Glue (item 110755).

And finally . . .

"Block Technique", "Inked Stamp Technique" and "Colouring Image Technique"
For this 5" x 3 3/4" Soft Suede cardstock (item 115318) card I wanted to play with all the techniques!  I used Granny Apple Green Ink (item 147095) for the block technique and cut the foliage using the Poppy Moments dies (item 151594), the Grove dies (item 157844), and the Full Basket dies (item 158679).  I also used Mango Melody Ink (item  147093) for the block technique and cut the flowers using the flower dies from the Teacup dies (item 160186); the butterfly using the Full Basket dies; and the sentiment circle using the Stylish Shapes dies (item 159183).  I stamped the butterfly and the sentiment (from the Cheerful Basket stamp set - item 158674) using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink (item 132708).  The basket and art supplies, also from the Cheerful Basket stamp set, were stamped on watercolour paper using Stazon Jet Black Ink (item 101406).  The art supplies were coloured using Watercolour Pencils - Assortment 1 (item 141709) and Assortment 2 (item 149014); and the basket was coloured using Soft Suede Ink (item 147115) and Basic Black watercolour pencil (Assortment 1).  I stamped the tag with the ledger stamp from the Ranunculus Romance stamp set (item 157968) using Rich Razzleberry Ink (item 147091).  The tag was cut using the Tailor Made Tags dies (item 155563), and the hole re-enforcer was cut from Soft Suede cardstock.  The little heart was cut from Polished Pink cardstock (item 155710) using one of the heart dies from the Teacup dies.  For the front panel I used Melon Mambo patterned paper from the 6" x 6" Designer Series Paper Assortments - Brights (item 159258), matted with Basic Black cardstock (item 121045).  To the tag I tied some Crumb Cake baker's twine (Baker's Twine Essentials Pack - item 155475), and for the adhesive I used Multipurpose Liquid Glue (item 110755).

*The Full Basket dies and the Cheerful Basket stamp set are also available as a bundle - the Cheerful Basket Bundle (item 158680) -  a 10% savings over purchasing the dies and stamp set separately.

If you don't want to use the block technique panels or inked stamped panels in full - maybe you end up not liking the entire panel - don't discard them - you can salvage the best parts by cutting tags!
