A few projects using the Window Flower Box dies

Hello!  Today I am sharing a few projects I worked on this week featuring the retiring Stampin' Up! Window Flower Box dies (item 154335).
During the ongoing Last Chance Promotion, the Window Flower Box dies are available at a 20% discount - but, as with all the retiring products from the May 2021-April 2022 Annual Catalogue, these dies will be available only while supplies last!  At the end of this blog post I will list the additional retiring products that I have used in my projects.

Farmhouse and Yellow Cottage Gift Bags
For these gift bags I was inspired by Sam Calcott's (www.mixedupcraft.com) February 28, 2020, You Tube video "Pretty Summer Cottage Gift Bag or Storage Box" [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwEoq5IfLz0], although I did amend the dimensions for my bags so that I could use 8 1/2" x 11" cardstock. For the box and roof of each gift bag I cut and scored cardstock as follows:
  • for the box - two pieces 8" x 10 1/2" - scored on the 8" side at 2 1/2" and 7 1/2" (the 1/2" flap is the side glue tab); and scored on the 10 1/2" side at 2 1/2" and 8 1/2".  When trimming these pieces I did not angle cut on my cuts on the top edges - since the roof pieces are glued to the front and back top flaps having straight edges on the top flaps makes aligning the roof pieces much easier (I learned this the hard way from my prototype!); and
  • for the roof - two pieces 5 1/2" x 4" - scored at 3/4" on the 4" side.
For each gift bag I assembled the box before adding on the decorative panels to the front, back, and sides.

For the shingles I cut 6" long x 1" wide cardstock strips and used the scalloped edge die from the Scalloped Contours dies (item 155560) - when cutting the scallops I aligned the round "bottoms" of the scallops with one long side of the cardstock strip.  For each roof section I used six shingle strips, which I glued on before attaching the roof sections to the box.  I began the shingling by lining up the first strip along the 5 1/2" bottom edge of the roof section so that the points between each scallop just covered the roof section bottom edge.  I did find that I had to slightly trim the long edge of the top shingle strip so that it would not interfere with the score line on the roof section.  After all the shingle strips were glued on to the roof section using scissors I trimmed the overhanging shingle strips so that the shingle strips would be flush with the edges of the roof section.  Before gluing the roof sections to the back and front top sections of the box, I marked three lines on the underside of each roof section to make the roof alignment a little easier:  a line 1/2" up from the bottom edge of the roof; and a line a 1/4" in from each side.

After the roof sections were glued on I glued the handles to the inside flaps of the roof sections (approximately 3/4" in from each side).  For the handles I used two pieces of cardstock - 11" x 3/4" - and to add a little texture to the handles I scored down the 11" length of each handle at 1/8" intervals, using a stylus and my scoreboard (Simply Scored Scoring Tool - item 122334).

For my gift bags I used magnets for the closures [Basic Grey large and small magnetic discs purchased at my local scrapbooking store] - adhering the magnets to the inside center of each roof flap.  To the inside and outside of each of the roof top flap sections I glued a 3/4" x 5 1/2" strip of cardstock - I wanted to cover the magnets and bottom of the handles on the inside and thought why not add to the outside too!  For the farmhouse gift bag I added another strip of shingles to the top flap - I cut the base strip for these shingles 3/4" wide rather than 1" wide.  To help neaten things on the inside of the main roof sections I also added some more cardstock to cover the box top flaps.

The box of these gift bags measures 6" tall x 5" wide x 2 1/2" deep.  I thought that these window box gift bags would be nice for Mother's Day, to hold a housewarming gift, or for any Spring gift-giving occasion!

Farmhouse Gift Bag
For the box, roof sections, shingles, handles, window frame, and flower pots of the farmhouse gift bag I used Cinnamon Cider cardstock (item 153078).  For the brick decorative panels for the front, back, and sides of the box I used Bloom Where You're Planted 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 155696); I used woodgrain paper from In Good Taste 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 152494) for the shutters and window shelf - the decorative paper behind the window frame is also from In Good Taste DSP.  For the shutter hardware and shelf brackets I used Basic Black cardstock (item 121045); for the "soil" I used Early Espresso cardstock (item 119686); for the shrubs and grasses I used Mossy Meadow cardstock (item 133676) and Old Olive cardstock (item 100702); for the little flowers I used Poppy Parade cardstock (item 119793) and Highland Heather cardstock (item 146986); for the flower centers I used So Saffron cardstock (item 105118) and Early Espresso cardstock.  For the flowerpots I used the small flowerpot die from the Window Box dies and the large flowerpot die from the Rain Boots dies (item 157690).  I lightly sponged the shingle strips, window frame, shutters, window shelf, and flowerpots with Soft Suede Ink (item 147115).  I have attached three photos showing the dies I used for the shrubs, soil, grasses, leaves, flowers and flower centers for both bags:

Yellow Cottage Gift Bag
For the box and handles of the yellow cottage bag I used Basic White Thick cardstock (item 159229); So Saffron cardstock (item 105118) for the roof, and decorative front, back, and side panels; Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) for the shingles, window frame, shutter hardware, and shelf brackets; Pacific Point cardstock (item 11350) for the shutters; Crumb Cake cardstock (item 120953) for the window shelf; Cinnamon Cider cardstock (item 153078) for the flowerpots; Early Espresso cardstock (item 119686) for the soil; Mossy Meadow cardstock (item 133676) and Old Olive cardstock (item 100702) for the shrubs, leaves, and grasses; Balmy Blue cardstock (item 146982) and Pacific Point cardstock for the little flowers; and So Saffron cardstock for the flower centers.  Behind the window I used Crumb Cake DSP from the 6" x 6" Designer Series Paper - Assortments - Neutrals (item 155226).  I used the Black & White  1/4" Gingham Ribbon (item 156485) for the bow on the handle.  In an attempt to replicate clapboard siding I scored the So Saffron cardstock panels at 1/4" intervals using a stylus and my scoring board.
For the base of the 4 1/4" x 3 1/2" top-fold co-ordinating gift card I used Basic White Thick cardstock with matting panels of Basic Black cardstock and Pacific Point cardstock.  The Pacific Point DSP is from the the 6" x 6" Designer Series Paper - Assortments - Brights (item 155228).  For the house, door, and chimney I used the Stitched Rectangles dies (item 151820); for the Basic Black cardstock roof I used the Stitched Triangles dies (item 152710); for the roof's Basic White Thick cardstock scalloped trim I used the Scalloped Contours dies (item 155560); the Balmy Blue cardstock window is a leftover window panel; and for the Poppy Parade cardstock window heart I used the little heart die from the Birds & More dies (item 152721).  I used the Black & White  1/4" Gingham Ribbon (item 156485) for the roof bow.

Window Box Handle Treat Box
For the base of this 4" tall (excluding handle) x 4" wide x 1" deep treat holder I cut and scored Soft Suede cardstock (item 115318) as follows: 10 1/2" x 5" - scored on the 10 1/2" side at 1", 5", 6", and 10" (the 1/2" flap is the glue tab); and scored on the 5" side at 1".  For the decorative paper panels I used In Good Taste 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 152494) - before assembling the box I glued the DSP panel to the front panel of the box and then traced around the window frame and, using my craft knife, cut the window opening - cutting just inside the pencil line and then glued on the Soft Suede cardstock window frame to the outside front of the box before gluing the approximately 1 3/4" x 2 3/4" acetate (Window Sheets - item 142314) panel to the inside of the front panel behind the window opening.  I used Mossy Meadow cardstock (item 133676) for the shutters, leaves, and grass; Soft Suede cardstock for the window shelf; Basic Gray cardstock (item 121044) for the pitcher; Cajun Craze cardstock (item 119684) and Cinnamon Cider cardstock (item 153078) for the flowerpots; Pear Pizzazz cardstock (item 131201) for the leafy sprigs in the pitcher; So Saffron cardstock (item 105118) for the little flowers; Early Espresso cardstock (item 119686) for the shovel base, tag hole reinforcer, and flower centers; Basic Black cardstock (item 121045) for the shutter hardware, shelf brackets, and shovel handle; Crumb Cake cardstock (item 120953) for the tag; and Silver Foil (Silver Foil 12" x 12" Specialty Pack - item 156457) for the shovel blade.  I stamped the pitcher and the tag with the dotty stamp from the Forever Fern stamp set (item 152559) - using Basic Gray Ink (item 149165) on the pitcher and Soft Suede Ink (item 147115) on the tag.  The tall leafy stem was cut using the Birds & More dies (item 152721); the little flowers using the Pierced Blooms dies (item 154312); the spiky grasses and shovel using the Garden dies (item 157918); the leafy sprigs in the pitcher using the Honeybee Blooms dies (item 157951); and the tag, hole reinforcer, and flower centers using the Tailor Made Tags dies (item 155563).  The Soft Suede cardstock handle measures 11" x 1", and the 11" x 3/4" woodgrain decorative panel is from the In Good Taste DSP.  I used Crumb Cake baker's twine (Baker's Twine Essentials Pack - item 155475) to tie the tag to the handle.  Using White Ink 147277) I lightly sponged the shutters, window shelf, pitcher, and shovel (I lightly sanded the blade of the shovel and lightly sponged it with Soft Suede Ink).  To each side panel I added one of the Brushed Metallic Adhesive-Backed Dots (item 156506).

And finally . . .
