A Few Barbie Inspired Projects!

Hello!  I have decided to join the Barbie bandwagon and today I am sharing a few "Barbie-inspired" projects I worked on this week - maybe you need an accessory for a film viewing outfit, or are exchanging small accessories - either human or doll-sized - at a Barbie-themed party!  Although greatly reduced over the past several years I do have a small collection of dolls and accessories - great for inspiration for the projects!  As a little girl I spent many happy hours playing with my dolls - unfortunately minus Ken, a Barbie Dream House, or, more importantly, Barbie's Camper - but I did have a very cool blue plastic truck for transportation! My sister and I were extremely fortunate to have a mother who spent many hours sewing and knitting detailed outfits for our dolls (and for us too!)

Just a quick note about the Stampin' Up! August promotion:  from August 1 through to August 31, 2023, Card Kits and Crafting Kits from the Kits Collection are on sale - up to 30% off!
The kits are all-inclusive - everything needed to complete the projects - apart from additional adhesive that you may want to use - as well as illustrated project instructions are included, and there are a variety of stamping and non-stamping kits available in both Card Kits and Crafting Kits.  You are of course free to complete the intended kit projects or use the kit components as a basis for your own projects!  Included with the Crafting Kits are the Festive Tags Kit - the newest kit release - and the Christmas Gifting Kit - a great opportunity to get a head start on Christmas tags! Included with the Card Kits is the slimline card Blossom Wishes Kit (released in July, 2023).  Crafting Kits also include the Wreath of Blooms, and Celebrate Today Magnet Kits.  Lots of variety in the Kits Collection - whether you want to make projects for yourself or to give as gifts!  Christmas tags always make a great pre-Christmas gift for busy friends and colleagues!

Just a quick note about the standard tools and supplies I used to complete my projects this week:
  • Paper Trimmer (item 152392) - for cutting paper and cardstock (can also be used for scoring);
  • stylus and scoreboard (Simply Scored Scoring Tool - item 122334) - for scoring cardstock (including the scoring to create the "clapboard" siding) - to ensure crisp folds I also burnished the folds with my Bone Folder (item 102300) - I also used the Bone Folder to gently curve the handle on the makeup case project;
  • Take Your Pick Tool (item 144107) - the tacky putty tip is a great help in picking up and placing small die cuts and embellishments, and I used the paper piercer tip to make the holes in the earring cards (I used a styrofoam block under the card when pushing the piercer tip through the card - slow and steady is the key!);
  • Stampin' Cut & Emboss Machine (item 149653) - for all die cutting and embossing; and
  • for the main adhesive, Multipurpose Liquid Glue (item 110755).
On with the projects!
Barbie's Dream House Purse
(perfect to hold all the necessities for attending a film viewing party!)

To complete this purse - a modified version of my Les Shoppes Art Supply Shop Purse (https://archiesatelier.blogspot.com/2023/06/playing-with-designer-series-paper.html), Farmhouse and Yellow Cottage gift bags (https://archiesatelier.blogspot.com/2022/04/a-few-projects-using-window-flower-box.html) and Window Wishes Bundle Christmas Cottage gift bag (https://archiesatelier.blogspot.com/2022/10/with-window-wishes-bundle-few-christmas.html) - which measures just under 8" tall (to the top of the roof but excluding handles - the box portion is 5 1/2" tall) x 3 3/4" wide x 1 1/2" deep, I used the following supplies:
  • for the base or box portion an 11" x 8 1/2" (full) sheet of Basic White Thick cardstock (item 159229), scored on the 11" side at 1 1/2", 5 1/4", 6 3/4", and 10 1/2" (1/2" tab is the glue tab); and scored on the 8 1/2" side at 1 1/2" and 7".  On the side that is the top edge I cut straight down the fold lines from the top edge to the score line;
  • Melon Mambo cardstock (item 115320) for the "clapboard siding" panels - two 5 3/8" x 3 5/8" pieces for front and back panels; and two 5 3/8" x 1 3/8" pieces for the two side panels.  Each panel scored 21 times at 1/4" intervals (the narrowest section on each panel became the top edge);
  • for the roof - two 3 1/4" x 4 1/2" pieces of Tahitian Tide cardstock (item 159261) - each scored on the 3 1/4" side at 1" (top band of roof - this section was also scored 3 times at 1/4" intervals);
  • for "shingles" - for each roof section six 3/4" x 4 3/4" strips of Tahitian Tide cardstock, which were cut using the long scalloped edge die from Scalloped Contours dies (item 155560) - the length of the strips were trimmed after die cutting to ensure equal placement of the scallops;
Scalloped Contours dies - 155560
  • Window dies (item 159756 - currently available on the Clearance Rack) - to cut outer window frame from Coastal Cabana cardstock (item 131297), inner frame from Basic White Thick cardstock, and window bow from Melon Mambo cardstock;
Window dies - 159756
  • largest and third largest circle dies from Stylish Shapes dies (item 159183) to cut the four circle frames used for the handles from Melon Mambo cardstock (two frames used for each handle - glued wrong sides together);
Stylish Shapes dies - 159183
  • Dainty Delight dies (item 160674) to cut daisies from Basic White cardstock (item 159276), lilacs from Highland Heather cardstock (item 146986) and Gorgeous Grape cardstock (item 146987), daisy centers from Daffodil Delight cardstock (item 119683), and two long curved leafy stems from Parakeet Party cardstock (item 159259);
Dainty Delight dies - 160674
  • Around The Bend dies (item 160649) to cut small leafy sprigs from Parakeet Party cardstock and Granny Apple Green cardstock (item 146990), tall leafy sprig and double leaf from Granny Apple Green cardstock, and three hearts from Melon Mambo cardstock;
Around The Bend dies - 160649
  • for the window backing a piece from the Masterfully Made 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 161192) trimmed to fit behind the outer window frame;
  • for the window box a 3 1/8" x 1 1/8" piece of Tahitian Tide cardstock - scored at 1/4" on three sides - this created a "pocket" into which I slipped the completed window frame (with backing panel) - the 1/4" foldback on sides and bottom provided a little more space to tuck in foliage and flowers.  The window box/window frame panel was glued to the front panel of the purse before flowers and foliage added to the window box;
  • for the front panel of the window box a 2 9/16" x 13/16" strip of Tahitian Tide cardstock, embossed using the Timber 3D Embossing Folder (item 156406); and
  • from Tinsel Gems Four-Pack (item 161623 - which Stampin' Up! advises will again be available to order the week of September 11, 2023) three Berry Burst gems added to the hearts, one Berry Burst gem added to center of Melon Mambo cardstock bow, and four Lemon Lime Twist gems added to flower centers.
For the closure I used two small Basic Grey magnetic discs (purchased at my local scrapbooking store), and for the bow on the handle 5/8" dark pink and white checked ribbon picked up at Dollar Tree.

Makeup Case
(holds three small bottles of nail polish)
For this makeup case, which measures 3" tall (excluding handles) x 3 1/4" wide x 1 3/4" deep, the construction is similar to that used for my Tea Bag Handled Boxes (https://archiesatelier.blogspot.com/2023/04/always-time-for-tea-despite-retirment.html), and I used the following supplies:
  • for the box - a 10 1/2" x 3 3/4" piece of Basic Black cardstock (item 121045), scored on the 10 1/2" side at 1 3/4", 5", 6 3/4", and 10" (1/2" tab is glue tab); and scored on the 3 3/4" side at 1 3/4" (bottom flaps);
  • for the lid supporting strips - for front and back two 1" x slightly less than 3 1/4" strips of Basic Black cardstock scored on the 1" side at 1/2" - only the back strip is folded along the score line as this is the hinge for the lid; for the sides two 1" x slightly less than 1 3/4" strips of Basic Black cardstock, also scored on the 1" side at 1/2" (the score lines are the guides for gluing the strips to the inside of the box);
  • for the lid - a 5 1/4" x 3 3/4" piece of Basic Black cardstock, scored at 1" on all four sides;
  • for the matting panels - Silver Foil 12" x 12" Specialty Pack (item 156457 - one of the Online Exclusives) - panels for front, back, and sides of box, and all sides and top of lid were cut 1/8" smaller than the corresponding cardstock panels;
  • black & white patterned paper from Zoo Crew 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 161304) - the DSP panels for front, back, and sides of box, and all sides and top of lid were each cut 1/8" smaller than the corresponding Silver Foil matting panels (1/4" smaller than the corresponding cardstock panels);
  • for the handle a 5" x 3/4" strip of Basic Black cardstock - scored 5 times at 1/8" intervals along length;, and scored at 1/2" from each end on the 5" side;
  • for the center handle strip - a 4" x 5/16" strip of Silver Foil;
  • for the "latch" - a Basic Black cardstock tag cut using the Tailor Made Tag dies (item 155563), and a Silver Foil label cut using the label die included with the Cheerful Daisies dies (item 161296).  After gluing the Silver Foil label to the tag base I scored the fold line (where tag is glued to the center top of the lid) at 1/2".  When die cutting the Silver Foil label I used a piece of watercolour paper against the Silver Foil and a lightweight cardboard shim - this resulted in a slight transfer of the watercolour paper texture to the Silver Foil.

Cheerful Daisies dies - 161296
  • Dainty Delight dies (item 160674) to cut the daisy from Basic White cardstock (item 159276), and flower center from Daffodil Delight cardstock (item 119683);
  • Around The Bend dies (item 160649) to cut three small leafy sprigs from Granny Apple Green cardstock (item 146990);
  • Crafting With You dies (item 161225) to cut small heart from Melon Mambo cardstock (item 115320);
Crafting With You dies - 161225
  • from the Tinsel Gems Four-Pack (item 161623) one Lemon Lime Twist gem added to flower center, and one Berry Burst gem added to heart; and
  • silver cord from Simply Elegant Trim (item 155766) tied through the center of the 3/8" black gross grain ribbon bow (ribbon from my Dollar Tree stash).
The small black button used on the "latch" was from my stash - a Stampin' Up! button from several years ago, and the two small Basic Grey magnetic discs used for the closure were purchased at my local scrapbooking store.

Nail Polish Bottle Box
For this lidded box, which measures 3  1/2" tall x 1 1/2" wide x 1 1/2" deep I used the following supplies:
  • for the box, a 6 1/2" x 5" piece of Basic Black cardstock (item 121045), scored on the 6 1/2" side at 1 1/2", 3", 4 1/2", and 6" (1/2" tab is glue tab); and scored on the 5" side at 1 1/2" (bottom flaps);
  • for the lid, a 3 1/16" square piece of Basic Black cardstock, scored at 3/4" on all four sides;
  • for the matting panels - Silver Foil 12" x 12" Specialty Pack (item 156457 - one of the Online Exclusives) - the panels for all sides of box, and all sides and top of lid were cut 1/8" smaller than the corresponding cardstock panels;
  • Fresh Freesia patterned paper from Masterfully Made 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 161192) - the DSP panels for all sides of the box, and all sides and top of the lid were cut 1/8" smaller than the corresponding Silver Foil matting panels (1/4" smaller than the corresponding cardstock panels); and
  • silver cord from Simply Elegant Trim (item 155766) for the double bow tied around the lid.
Little Shopping Bag
At 2 1/2" tall x 2" wide x 3/4" deep, this little shopping bag is just the right size to hold a pair of doll-sized shoes - and maybe a pair of sunglasses too!  For this little bag I used the following supplies:
  • for the bag a 5 3/4" x 3 1/4" piece of Basic White Thick cardstock (item 159229), scored on the 6" side at 3/8", 3/4", 2 3/4", 3 1/8", 3 1/2", and 5 1/2" (the 1/4" tab, which is the glue tab, should be trimmed slightly to avoid bulk at the side fold line); and scored on the 3 1/4" side at 3/4" (bottom flaps);
  • black & white patterned paper from Zoo Crew 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 161304) for the front and back DSP panels - cut 1/8" smaller than the corresponding cardstock panels - and for small strips glued to the inside of the front and back of the bag to cover the holes for the handles (and handle ends);
  • 1/8" hole punch - I made a little cardboard template for placement of the holes - using a paperclip to hold the template in place while I punched the holes on the front and back panels - holes were punched after the DSP panels were glued on;;
  • small tag die included with Mini Pocket Envelope dies (item 159167 - one of the Online Exclusives) to cut tag from Basic Black cardstock (item 121045);
Mini Pocket Envelope dies - 159167
  • Dainty Delight dies (item 160674) to cut daisy from Basic White cardstock (item 159276), and flower center from Daffodil Delight cardstock (item 119683);
  • Around The Bend dies (item 160649) to cut one small leafy sprig from Granny Apple Green cardstock (item 146990);
  • from Tinsel Gems Four-Pack (item 161623) one Lemon Lime Twist gem added to flower center, and two Berry Burst gems added to lower left corner of bag front; and
  • silver cord from Simply Elegant Trim (item 155766) to tie flower tag to handle.
For each handle I used an approximately 6" length of black paper ribbon, picked up at Dollarama.  I secured each end to the inside of the bag with dabs of Multipurpose Liquid Glue.  To complete the bag I added some crinkled up Barbie pink tissue paper.

And finally . . .
Doll Shoe Earring Cards
I had a lot of fun making a few pairs of doll shoe earrings - you can never have too many!  For the cards to hold the earrings I used the scalloped rectangle dies from the Scalloped Contours dies (item 155560), matching colours to dolls and doll packaging - adding inside and outer matting panels on the three smaller cards, the final measurements of which are all about 4" x 2 3/4".  For the smaller cards I used combinations of Melon Mambo cardstock (item 115320), Pumpkin Pie cardstock (item 105117), Parakeet Party cardstock (item 159259), Basic White cardstock (item 159276), Basic Black cardstock (item 121045), Poppy Parade cardstock (item 119793), Coastal Cabana cardstock (item 131297), Azure Afternoon cardstock (item 161719), Starry Sky cardstock (item 159263), Fresh Freesia cardstock (item 155613), Lemon Lime Twist patterned paper from Stargazing 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 161175), Boho Blue/Misty Moonlight patterned paper from Let's Go Fishing 12" x 12" Designer Series Paper (item 161534), and Azure Afternoon patterned paper from Bright & Beautiful 6" x 6" Designer Series Paper (item 161449).

For the large card (4 5/8" x 3 1/4") I used circles cut from Melon Mambo, Tahitian Tide, Basic White, and Parakeet Party cardstock using the Stylish Shapes dies (item 159183), and a small banner cut from Basic Black cardstock using the Nested Essentials dies (item 161597), over an Azure Afternoon cardstock scalloped rectangle with a Basic Black cardstock mat.
Nested Essentials dies - 161597
To package the cards I used a variety of treat bags picked up at Michael's, Dollar Tree, and Dollarama, and an "almost Parakeet Party" polka dot treat bag from several years ago while Target was still in Canada!
